    With 23,082 Cases Assam Records Highest Number Of Crimes Against Women In NE

    A total of 1772 rape cases, 27 rape and murder cases and 171 dowry-related death cases were reported in Assam in 2017

    In Northeast India, Assam recorded the highest number of cases of crimes against women with over 23,000 in 2017 while Nagaland recorded only 79 cases.

    A report published by the National Crime Records Bureau stated that a total of 23,082 out of 3,59,849 cases of crime against women were registered, which is 6.4 per cent of the total crimes in the country, in Assam in 2017. Among other Northeastern states, 972 cases were registered in Tripura followed by 567 in Meghalaya, 337 in Arunachal Pradesh, 301 in Mizoram, 236 in Manipur, 163 in Sikkim and 79 in Nagaland.

    A total of 1772 rape cases were reported in Assam in 2017 followed by Meghalaya (119), Tripura (95), Arunachal Pradesh (59), Manipur (40), Mizoram (25), Nagaland (10) and Sikkim (17). On the other hand, 27 cases of rape and murder reported in Assam in 2017 while two in Tripura and one in Nagaland. No cases of rape and murder were reported in Manipur, Meghalaya and Sikkim.

    Assam has the highest number of dowry-related deaths in the Northeast. Assam recorded 171 dowry-related deaths in 2017 followed by 33 in Tripura and one in Meghalaya. No dowry-related cases were reported in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim and Nagaland.

    In 2016, Assam recorded 20,869 cases followed by Tripura (1013), Meghalaya (372), Arunachal Pradesh (367), Manipur (253), Sikkim (253), Mizoram (120) and Nagaland (105). On the other hand, in 2015, 23,365 cases were registered in Assam followed by Tripura (1267), Arunachal Pradesh (384), Meghalaya (337), Manipur (266), Mizoram (158), Nagaland (91) and Sikkim (53).

    The report also revealed that Uttar Pradesh is the most unsafe state for women followed by Maharashtra. A total of 56,011 cases of crime against women were registered in Uttar Pradesh while 31,979 cases in Maharashtra.
