Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 13th, 2020, said that he will resign from politics if more than five lakh illegal foreigners get Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act.
While speaking in the special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Sarma said, “Not more than five lakh people will be granted Indian citizenship under this act. I will resign from politics if more than five lakh foreigners get citizenship and the government will take responsibility.”
Earlier on January 9th, 2020, the minister, while slamming the Congress for allowing illegal migrants to settle down, had said, “The people who will get Indian citizenship had settled during Congress rule. Bharatiya Janata Party has not brought them.”
“Everything related to granting citizenship will be clear once the application process is over,” he added.
