Watch: ‘Disinfectant’ Sprayed On Migrants On Return To UP’s Bareilly

The Congress came down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh government for spraying chemical on migrants

In a viral video, the officials in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly can be reportedly seen spraying chemicals to the migrants.

According to several media reports, the migrant had walked down from Noida and Delhi. The migrants were told by the officials to wait at the bus stand and were assured of food and buses.

Mohd Afzal, one of the migrants in the group told media that about 50 people were waiting for food at the satellite bus adda when a few men in protective suits came and began spraying “chemical” on them.

“They said that they from the sanitization department and were sanitizing us. The children began crying and women were also shocked. After the spraying was completed, the children complained of itching in eyes and some women developed rashes,” Afzal told media.

A few policemen were also at the spot when the “chemical” was being sprayed on migrants.

After the netizens slammed the Uttar Pradesh government, Bareilly District Magistrate said in a tweet in Hindi, ” This video has been investigated, the affected people are being treated under the direction of the CMO. The team of Bareilly Municipal Corporation and Fire Brigade had instructions to sanitize the buses, but they did so due to hyperactivity. Instructions have been given to take action against the concerned.”

The Congress came down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh government for spraying chemical on migrants. “The mistreatment of these already persecuted migrants at the hands of govt officials is despicable. Who is in-charge and how did the Uttar Pradesh government allow this to happen!? asked senior Congress leader Jitin Prasada.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra too slammed the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government. “Please don’t indulge into such inhuman actions. The labourers have already suffered a lot. Don’t spray chemicals on them. This won’t protect them but harm their health,” Vadra tweeted in Hindi.

Lakhs of migrants were left stranded in different parts of the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown last week to fight coronavirus, which has killed at least 29 persons so far.

In a series of tweets, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP chief Mayawati wrote: “Spraying of disinfectants on migrants in Bareilly is an example of sheer cruelty, injustice. The government should pay attention immediately.”
