Viral Video: Sonari BJP MLA Nabanita Handique Shakes A Leg To ‘Dafli Wale’, Faces AASU’s Wrath

The All Assam Students Union(AASU) slammed the legislator for her “weird” dance moves

A video of a Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) legislator from Sonari constituency, Nabanita Handique dancing to the tune of Bollywood iconic track ‘Dafli Wale Dafli Baja’ is doing rounds in the social media.

The MLA was seen holding a plate and enthusiastically whirling around to the 80’s hit track. She was joined by the crowd who equally cheered the legislator. ‘Dafli Wale Dafli Baja’ was one of the most popular songs of the 80s. Iconic musicians Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar had lent their voice to the song for the film “Sargam”.

Soon after the dance video surfaced on the internet, reactions started to pour in from all quarters.

The All Assam Students Union(AASU) slammed the legislator for her “weird” dance moves and claimed that she has become a “laughing stock” in front of the people amid the tension in the state over the amended Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA).

“At a time when Assam is on boil over CAA, a local MLA enjoying and dancing to Bollywood song is very unfortunate. She has just become a laughing stock in her own constituency. We urge her not to take part in such activities,” said Nitul Gogoi, Secretary AASU, Charaideo.

Handique was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Sonari in 2019 by-election. She was the only woman candidate in the constituency and garnered 66,698 votes, defeating Congress rival, Sushil Kumar Suri.
