Twenty-six-year-old Ripunjay Gogoi won hearts of the Guwahatians and the netizens alike for deftly making way for an ambulance stuck in traffic at a busy junction in the city – GS Road. It was a usual day for cyclist Ripunjay on May 6th, 2019. He was cycling back home from the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary with his group. As he crossed the Supermarket area in the city, he saw an ambulance moving with its sirens blaring as no one on the road bothered to give way to the vehicle.
“It was an instant decision. The motorists were blocking the way instead of giving space, hence I thought ‘let me try’. I approached the drivers of each vehicle and asked them to make way for the ambulance. Few drivers hurled abuses at me, I too gave them back,” said Ripunjay while speaking to TIME8.
He added, “It was around 8:30 pm…peak time for jams at the GS Road. First I thought that the ambulance will go to the Down Town Hospital. But the ambulance driver told me they are moving towards Nagaon. I tried to navigate the way for the ambulance till Pibco. From there, the way was clear.”
A resident of Six Mile area, Ripunjoy is undertaking his SSC coaching in Guwahati. An alumnus of Maharishi Vidya Mandir in Lal Mati and Army Public School in Basistha, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Delhi. He is a member of Guwahati Cycling Community(GCC) and also an active member of the wonder wheels team.
Appealing Guwahatians to make way for ambulances, he said, “Blocking an ambulance is equal to playing with someone’s life. We can all do our bit. Each one of us should take the lead during jams and make way for ambulances. I took the lead not for going viral on social media or tags. I was even unaware that I am being videographed. It was only the next day, I got to know about the video.”
