The Budget Session of Parliament began on January 31st, 2020 with the address of President Ram Nath Kovind to the joint sitting of two Houses of Parliament.
President Kovind’s speech in the Central Hall of Parliament witnessed a ruckus after he hailed the newly enacted Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) and said that the legislation is good for the persecuted minorities. He also added that CAA has fulfilled Mahatma Gandhi’s dream.
“Mahatma Gandhi had said that Hindus who do not want to live in Pakistan can come to India, my government fulfilled Bapu’s wish by implementing citizenship law.” He was quoted as saying. He also condemned atrocities against minorities in Pakistan and urged the global community to take necessary action.
His speech was interrupted by the opposition members who raised ‘shame’ slogans.
The government will release the Economic Survey for 2019-20 today followed by a press conference by CEA Dr Krishnamurthy V Subramanian. The Economic Survey is the flagship annual document of the Finance Ministry of the Indian government throwing light on the state’s economy. It consists of an overview of the CEA on key issues, data and figures on different sectors of the economy provided by their respective departments and ministries and the national income, production, employment and so on.
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu will also chair a meeting of floor leaders of Rajya Sabha at his residence today.
The first phase of the session will conclude on February 11th, while the second part of the session will begin from March 2nd and end on April 3rd.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2020-21 on February 1st, 2020.
