The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave ex-post facto approval for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Bangladesh on withdrawal of 1.82 cusecs of water from Feni River by India for drinking water supply scheme for Sabroom in Tripura.
Sabroom town in South Tripura has an inadequate drinking water supply as the groundwater has high iron content.
“As on date, there is no water-sharing agreement on Feni river between India and Bangladesh. The present supply of drinking water to Sabroom town is inadequate. The groundwater in this region has high iron content. Implementation of this scheme would benefit over 7000 population of Sabroom town,” a press communiqué issued on November 6th, 2019 stated.
A total of seven bilateral documents concerning the water disputes were signed between the Ministry of Water Resources of Bangladesh and Ministry of Jal Shakti, India. The accord aims at providing drinking water supply to the Sabroom Town of Tripura.
The Feni River is a trans-boundary river located in Bangladesh. The water rights have been a source of dispute between both the Asian countries.
