Tiger Gives Villagers Sleepless Nights In Gohpur

A team of the state forest department and the Ghahigaon Police on September 12th, 2019 reached the village to take stock of the situation

People residing in the Dathkola area located along the banks of the Brahmaputra River are spending sleepless nights ever since they spotted a prowling tiger wading through surged water. The people have lost their cool as paw marks of tigers have been noticed at the village from time to time.

Intimated by the locals, a team of the state forest department and the Ghahigaon Police on September 12th, 2019 reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

“This sixth addition of Kaziranga National Park is quite near the village. There are over 111 tigers in the park. This morning, we were informed that a tiger has strayed into this village and have taken shelter. He have noticed some pugmarks but it is not clear due to the rain”, said Divisional Forest Officer(DFO), Mukut Chandra Das.

In July this year, a photograph of a tigress found resting on a bed found lying at a shack on the fringes of the flood-hit Kaziranga National Park took the internet by storm. After a day-long effort, the tigress was tranquilized and released into the wild.

“In the last wave of flood, a tiger took shelter here and left the village without harming anyone. So, we urge the people not to panic and cooperate with us so that animal can return to the park”, the DFO added.

“The police have confirmed movement of tigers in the village. There are about five villages in this area. We are in a state of constant fear as the tigers are not traced despite its presence in the village. Most of the villagers stay indoors out of fear”, said a villager.

Meanwhile, Ranger Purno Mohali have urged the villagers not to panic and confirmed that elaborate arrangements are being made for the safety of the people. “We have urged the villagers not to panic and be cautious after the sunset”, added Mohali.
