Assam’s singing sensation Zubeen Garg who is popular for his ‘free speech’ today reiterated that all the people living in Assam are ‘Axomiya’ and that people should not divide themselves into a race or community.
“There is no race or community, we are all one and we are all Assamese people,” Zubeen said.
The statements came after the singer drew the wrath of the Kalita community for his remark against their demands on special status. The singer cum actor had said that instead of demanding special status the people should focus more on being ‘Assamese’.
“I have been saying these lines time and again that I do not belong to any religion, caste or race….these are just limitations because we are beyond that. A lot of times people misunderstand me. They(Kalita community) are my people…Show me, love, I will reciprocate the same” he added.
The All Assam Kalita Janagusti Students’ Union (AAKJSU) had recently staged a protest demanding 50 per cent reservation in the government sector jobs for the next five years and ST status. The AAKJSU also threatened to hold democratic protests if the government does not fulfil the demands of the Kalita community.
Garg also voiced his opposition against the newly enacted law– Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) and urged the people to fight unitedly against the legislation.
