Former Assam Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi on August 3rd, 2019 stated that he has doubts over the publication of a free and fair National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Addressing a presser here in the city, Gogoi said, “The very purpose for which we took the initiative of NRC has failed. Though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is blowing the trumpet of publishing an error-free NRC, I have my doubts.”
He added, “The officials who were involved in including the names of illegal foreigners in the NRC list should be punished by the state government. But the BJP government will not take any action as it will reveal their own corrupt practices.”
It may be mentioned, the Assam government presented the district-wise data of the people included, excluded in the NRC at the summer session of the ongoing Assam Legislative Assembly.
The data suggested that inclusion of people residing in areas bordering Bangladesh – with Muslim domination – was more in comparison to districts with indigenous domination. The data was submitted by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary at the Assembly.
The Supreme Court which aims to weed out illegal immigrants through the publication of the NRC on July 23rd, 2019 extended the deadline for publication of the NRC from July 31st, 2019 to August 31st, 2019.
On the midnight of December 31st, 2017, partial draft of the NRC was released and subsequently on July 30th, 2018, the complete draft NRC was released. A total of 28,983,677 persons were found eligible out of 32,991,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC.
The NRC authorities on June 26th, 2019 published an additional draft exclusion list consisting of 1,02,462 persons.
