Supreme Court To Hear Pleas Challenging CAA Today

A total number of 75 petitions challenging the CAA was filed in the apex court

The Supreme Court on January 22nd, 2020 is likely to hear all the pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA).

A three-judge bench of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Justice Sanjiv Khanna will hear the pleas today at around 11:30 am.

A total number of 75 petitions challenging the CAA was filed in the apex court. The petitions under consideration include Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s plea challenging the constitutionality of the citizenship law.

The Supreme Court had on December 18th, 2019 refused to stay the operation of the CAA but decided to examine the constitutional validity of the law. The apex court had issued notice to the Centre seeking its response by the second week of January against the petitions challenging the amended citizenship law.

On January 9th, 2020 CJI Bobde said that the top court will hear the challenge to the constitutionality of the CAA only after the violence which erupted across the country against the legislation stops.

SA Bobde was appointed as the 47th Chief Justice of India on November 18th, 2019 and his tenure will end on 23 April, 2021.
