Assam Bharatiya Janata Party president Ranjeet Kumar Dass on February 21st, 2020, said that Shaheen Bagh mastermind Sharjeel Imam’s interrogation will reveal many names from the state who have a connection with him.
Speaking to the media persons, Dass said, “Sharjeel Imam has relation with many from Assam. Everything will be clear after the interrogation.”
Besides, he said that the people who had a connection with Imam should be hanged, “They should be hanged,” he told reporters.
The former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Imam, who was brought to Guwahati on February 20th, 2020, has been sent to crime branch custody for a period of four days. On February 19th, 2020, the Patiala House Court handed him over to the Assam Police for interrogation for his “cut-off Northeast” remark. However, the crime branch had sought fourteen days of custody.
He was arrested on January 28th, 2020, for “cut-off Northeast” remark from Jehanabad in Bihar.
It may be mentioned that on February 13th, 2020, he was presented before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup through video conferencing. Later, he was sent to judicial custody.
The JNU student has been booked by police of six states – Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi – for sedition for his provocative speeches had stoked controversy with his “cut off Assam from India” remark. He has been slapped with charges of sedition and inciting enmity between communities under Sections 124A, 153A and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
