Former three-time Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on August 6th, 2019 came down heavily on the Modi government for withdrawing the special status granted under Article 370 to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Gogoi said that the Central government committed a ‘historic blunder’ by scrapping the abrogation of this Article.
Addressing a presser here on August 6th, 2019, Gogoi said, “The government humiliated the people of J&K by scrapping Article 370. This will escalate tensions in J&K. Instead of solving the existing problems, former J&K chief ministers and other leaders were arrested.”
Amidst the massive uproar, the Rajya Sabha on August 5th, 2019 passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill that seeks to scrap Article 370 and Article 35A in J&K, while also bifurcating the state into Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Post the passage of the Bill, former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah and People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone were arrested on the night of August 5th, 2019 after being put under house arrest.
He added, “The move to scrap Article 370 is a historic blunder. It is a totally unconstitutional, undemocratic and dictatorial act. They (Centre) has created a situation like Emergency in J&K. This is a warning signal for Northeast too.”
It may be mentioned that Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee Lal Thanhawla too expressed concern over the developments. He tweeted, “It has become a threat to states like Mizoram, Nagaland & Arunachal which are protected by the Consitution.”
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 5th, 2019 hailed the Modi government and stated that a ‘historic blunder’ has been corrected by scrapping the abrogation of this Article.
