US President Donald Trump recounting minute-by-minute details of Iran’s top military commander Qassem Soleimani’s killing at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida offered some chilling details of the drone strike.
The airstrike had apparently led to an escalation of tensions across the region including the ongoing dispute with the Congress for “waging war”.
The President said that Soleimani was “saying bad things about the country” which led to his decision to authorize his killing from the White House Situation Room.
Speaking at the GOP fundraising dinner, Trump was quoted as saying, “They are together sir. Sir, they have two minutes and eleven seconds to live. They’re in the car, they’re in an armoured vehicle going…Sir, they have approximately one minute to live sir….30 seconds…10, 9, 8.. then all of a sudden boom. They’re gone, sir”.
The new developments seemed to contradict the reasons behind the killing of Soleimani who was called a ‘noted terrorist’ .
Earlier the Pentagon had said that Soleimani was “developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region,” and that he was “responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members”.
Top Iranian general and powerful political figure Qassem Soleimani, was killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport on January 3rd, 2020.
