The film tells the story of a rapper Murad from the Dharavi slums of Mumbai who dreams of making it big in the world of music

Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt is India’s official entry for the Oscars. Zoya’s filmmaker-actor brother Farhan Akhtar tweeted the big news on social media on September 21st, 2019.

“#GullyBoy has been selected as India’s official entry to the 92nd Oscar Awards. #apnatimeaayega,” Farhan tweeted.

The film will complete in the 92nd Academy Awards in Best Foreign Language Film category, officially known as the Best International Feature Film category.

It may be mentioned, last year, Assam’s Rima DasVillage Rockstars was India’s official entry to the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars. Unfortunately, it was not nominated for the top nine films.

The Gully Boy was premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 9th, 2019 and released in the country on February 15th, 2019. The film tells the story of a rapper from the Dharavi slums of Mumbai who dreams of making it big in the world of music.

In the film, Ranveer and Siddhant play budding street rappers, Murad and MC Sher, while Alia essays the role of Safeena, an aspiring medical student in love with Murad.

Overlooking his struggles and following his passion for rapping, Murad goes on to win the contest open for Nas. The film ends with Murad’s family and friends watching as Murad, the winner of the contest, begins his opening performance.
