Rajasthan Royals To Play 2 IPL Matches In Guwahati

The franchise has an Assam connection as Guwahati boy Riyan Parag plays for Rajasthan Royals

For the very first time, Assam will get the chance to experience the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rajasthan Royals (RR) is will play two of its IPL fixtures at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium officially known as Dr Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Usually, the RR play their home games at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The franchise had requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to allow playing few matches of the 2020 edition of the IPL in Guwahati.

Assam Finance Minister took to Twitter to share the news and thanked BCCI secretary Jay Shah for taking the “great initiative for the people of Northeast”.

“It is a moment of joy for us as @rajasthanroyals will play 2 matches in #IPL’s next season in #Guwahati. I appreciate Sri @JayShah for this great initiative for the people of #NorthEastIndia. May the spirit of sports keep us united forever,” tweeted Sarma.

A PIL has been filed at the Rajasthan High Court challenging the decision of RSS to shift a couple of their home games to Guwahati. However, the BCCI has backed the RR and made it clear that they have not broken any rules in requesting for a second home venue.

The franchise has an Assam connection as Guwahati boy Riyan Parag plays for Rajasthan Royals. Earlier this year, the franchise’s chief operating officer, Jake Lush McCrum had visited the Barsapara stadium along with Riyan,to inspect the stadium. He also held a discussion with the Assam Cricket Association officials.
