Dark clouds and mild shower greeted Guwahatians on the morning of January 5th, 2020 – the big day for India as Men In Blue is all to play the first match of the decade against Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
According to AccuWeather, there are more than 60% chances of rain between 5 and 6 PM in the evening hours. The toss is likely to take place at 6:30 pm and the match is scheduled to start from 7 pm.
The match will be played when the protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) refuses to die in the state. The anti-CAA protests had paralysed Guwahati for a few days in December last year.
However, speaking to the press in Guwahati on the eve of the 1st T20I between India and Sri Lanka, India captain Virat Kohli said that he found the city “absolutely safe”.
Meanwhile, to conduct the match ‘incident-free’, the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has banned carrying posters, banners and message boards inside the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
Devajit Saikia, secretary, ACA, said that placards showing ‘4’ and ‘6’ too will not be allowed. “No sketch pens or marker pens will be allowed to carry. Only wallets, handbags, mobile phones and vehicle keys will be permitted inside the ground,” he said.
