A public hearing will soon be held for the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, this was informed by Samujjal Bhattacharya chief adviser, All Assam Students Union (AASU) and member of the high-level committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to recommend measures for its implementation.
The committee which met on August 18th, 2019 at the Administrative Staff College, Khanapara said that the next meeting will be held on September 6th, 2019.
Speaking with media persons, Bhattacharya, said, “we have come to a conclusion that for the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, we will reach out to the general public, all cultural organizations and prominent leaders of the state and take in their suggestions in a public hearing.”
“We will accordingly discuss the suggestions in our next meeting and move forward to take the necessary steps for the implementation of Clause 6,” he added.
It may be mentioned, on July 16th, 2019, the Union Home Ministry constituted a 13-member high-level committee to implement Clause 6 of the 1985 Assam Accord. The committee is headed by Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma, a former judge of Gauhati High Court.
The other panel members include Ramesh Borpatragohain, Advocate General, Assam; Niloy Dutta, Advocate General, Arunachal Pradesh; Subhash Das, IAS (retd); Pallav Bhattacharya, IPS (retd); Dr Srishtidhar Dutta, retired professor; Sumanta Chaliha, author and columnist; Dr Jaikanta Sharma, professor and columnist; Wasbir Hussain, senior journalist; Samujjal Bhattacharya, chief adviser, All Assam Students Union (AASU); Dipanka Nath, president, AASU; Lurinjyoti Gogoi, general secretary, AASU and academician Mrinal Miri.
The Assam Accord was a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed between representatives of the Government of India and the leaders of the Assam Movement in New Delhi on August 15th, 1985. A six-year agitation demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants was launched by the AASU in 1979. It culminated with the signing of the Assam Accord.
