Privatization Of NRL Will Hurt Local Sentiments: MP Gaurav Gogoi To Modi

BCPL holds 61.65 per cent share of Numaligarh Refinery Limited

Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi on October 21st, 2019 wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi opposing Centre’s alleged move to privatize the  Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited(BCPL) which will subsequently lead to the privatization of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).

Gaurav wrote, “This privatisation is being opposed on numerous grounds by the general public in Assam. First, there is a rising public sentiment that has emerged against this move.”

Gaurav further added that Numaligarh Refinery was born as a result of the historic commitment made in the Assam Accord by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He claimed that the refinery has contributed significantly to the socio-economic development of the district of Golaghat while generating employment for the indigenous youth.

The MP said that the BCPL holds 61.65 per cent share of Numaligarh Refinery Limited located in the Golaghat district. The privatization of the BPCL will subsequently result in the privatization of NRL.

“There is, therefore, a regional value and history attached to NRL. Second, the refinery is a profit-making subsidiary. Since October 2000, NRL has paid more than Rs 30,000 crore to the national and state exchequer,” the MP added.

He said, NRL has initiated environmental conservation in the region by producing friendly fuels and adopting environmentally friendly technology. Additionally, NRL is also committed to several Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives including infrastructure development, rural electrification and promotion of arts and literature.

“With a track record of continuous growth and socio-economic development, NRL has been conferred the status of Mini Ratna PSU,” Gaurav added in the letter.

Finally, Gogoi wrote, NRL has been conferred the status of Mini Ratna PSU and its privatization would not only hurt the local sentiments and shared history but would also leave several local people jobless and insecure.
