Kokrajhar: State social welfare and soil conservation minister Pramila Rani Brahma on August 3rd, 2019 visited the students of Phaluguri Nayapara Government Lower Primary School located in Gossaigaon, Kokrajhar and took stock of the flood situation in the area.
It may be mentioned that the students of the school since the end of their summer break are taking their regular classes under the open sky after their school building collapsed in the recent floods on July 23rd, 2019.
The report of students attending classes in the open air amid the dust and scorching heat was aired in a section of the local media including TIME8.
The Assam Minister reviewed the flood situation with the Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner and concerned authorities on August 2nd, 2019. On August 3rd, she personally met the students of the school and distributed chocolates, biscuits among them. She also assured help and announced to take up the matter with the Assam Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya.
The school was established in 2009 and has 46 students from nursery to Class V. There are two teachers – Taphozal Ali Mandal (headmaster) and Noor Zamal. Mandal told that the school collapsed due to the flood caused by the overflowing Gongia river, which flows from Bhutan. The locals appealed to the Assam government to build a new school for the students.
