Congress’ Sarukhetri MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar on August 27th, 2019 demanded that post the publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC), Hojai Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Shiladitya Dev should be placed under house arrest.
Sikdar said, “Shiladitya’s views and opinions are completely irrational and he can trigger communal clashes between communities with his statements. He should be placed under house arrest to maintain peace in the society on the day of NRC publication.”
It may be mentioned that the NRC exercise conducted to segregate the Indian citizens from the illegal immigrants who entered the Indian territory after March 25th, 1971, under the guidelines of the Supreme Court is slated to publish its final draft on August 31st, 2019.
Sikdar further added that if the Hojai legislator is put under house arrest, the deployment of Army jawans and security personnel won’t be necessary.
Meanwhile, the Assam police have taken adequate security measures ahead of the publication of the final NRC.
On the midnight of December 31st, 2017, a partial draft of the NRC was released and subsequently on July 30th, 2018, the complete draft NRC was released. A total of 2,89,83,677 persons were found eligible out of 3,29,91,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC. The NRC authorities on June 26th, 2019 published an additional draft exclusion list consisting of 1,02,462 persons.
