    Popularise Football In Assam: Sonowal Kicks Off Bordoloi Trophy

    The Guwahati Sports Association is the host of the championship where eight teams will vie for the title this year

    Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal inaugurated the 66th edition of the Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy Tournament at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati on September 20th, 2019. He urged all to unitedly work towards revitalising the prestigious football tournament.

    The Guwahati Sports Association is the host of the championship where eight teams will vie for the title this year. The inaugural match between the ASEB Sports Club and Gauhati Town Club ended in a draw.

    Sonowal said that the Bordoloi Trophy has been inspiring budding footballers of the region from decades and providing a platform to showcase their talents. He also urged the organisers of the tournament to prepare a 12-month plan for popularising the game across Assam.

    The CM also elaborated the government’s efforts to increase Assam’s sports engagements with the South East Asian nations through the Act East policy.

    The first and second semi-final matches will be held on September 28th and 29th, 2019 respectively. The final match will be held on October 2nd, 2019 from 6 pm onwards.

    A separate inaugural ceremony of the tournament will be held at the Sonapur Minis Stadium on September 21st, 2019.
