Trinity Saioo, a tribal farmer based out of Mulieh village in West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya will be conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri for her distinguished service. She is one among the 141 distinguished personalities across India to have been named for the Padma Awards 2020.
Saioo, mother to six children spearheaded the women-led farming movement in Meghalaya and enabled farmers to triple their incomes with the cultivation of the prized Lakadong Turmeric. She helped illiterate women to learn organic cultivation and earn their livelihood.
She started her journey with 25 farmers in Mulieh with assistance from Spices Board and with her exemplary and steadfast leadership she started to motivate other farmers from adjoining villages. Within four years 800 farmers were mobilized to cultivate this Lakadong variety in their respective villages. Now, Saioo has over 100s of Turmeric SHG’s under her federation. The federation even exports Lakadong Turmeric to southern State like Kerala, Karnataka and the other Northeastern States.
It may be mentioned that the Lakadong Turmeric is known for its high curcumin content of above 7% and has high market demand for its unique taste, flavour, aroma and vibrant yellow colour.
