Only Switch Off Lights: Power Ministry Clarifies On Modi’s 9-Min Blackout Call

Adequate arrangements and protocols are in place to handle grid stability during lights out event on April 5 at 9 pm: Power Ministry

The Ministry of Power clarified that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to switch off lights at 9 pm for 9-minute on April 5th, 2020 does not extend to street lights or appliances like computers, TVs, fans, refrigerators and ACs.

The Ministry also mentioned that the countrymen should not worry about voltage fluctuation when they switch off some lights following Modi’s appeal for a show of solidarity to fight the “darkness of coronavirus”.

“Some apprehensions have been expressed that this may cause instability in the grid and fluctuation in voltage which may harm the electrical appliances. The Indian electricity grid is robust and stable and adequate arrangements and protocols are in place to handle the variation in demand,” the Ministry said in a statement.

The statement added that the call to switch off lights is a voluntary one which does not apply to street lights or appliances like computers, TVs, fans, refrigerators and ACs in the homes.

“There is no call to switch off either street lights or appliances like computers, TVs, fans, refrigerators and ACs in the homes. Only lights should be switched off. The lights in hospitals and all other essential services like public utilities, municipal services, offices, police stations, manufacturing facilities, etc will remain on. The call given by PM Modi is to just switch off lights in residences,” the Power Ministry further said.

All local bodies have been advised to keep the street lights on for public safety.

Modi has urged the nation to switch off all lights for nine minutes and light up candles, lamps or cellphone flashlights on April 5th, 2020 as a sign of solidarity in the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“On April 5th, 2020, I want 9 minutes from all you, at 9 pm. Listen carefully, on April 5th, 2020, at 9 pm, turn off all the lights in your homes, stand at your doors or in your balconies, and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes. I repeat, light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights, for 9 minutes at 9 pm,” Modi said in his address.
