The Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on November 3rd, 2019, said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a base document for future.
Launching Post Colonial Assam, a book by Assam journalist Mrinal Talukdar, in New Delhi, Gogoi said, “It is not the point whether it is 19 lakh or 40 lakh people excluded. It is not the document of the moment. It is a base document for the future.”
The CJI further said, “Irresponsible reporting by a few media houses worsened the situation.”
Gogoi further stressed the need to ascertain with certainty the number of illegal migrants nothing more or less.
The final NRC list was released on August 31st, 2019, after six-years-long process under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India. The process was started in 2013 after the top court promulgated an order. The final list included a total of 3,11,21,004 people and excluding 19,06,657 people including those who did not submit claims.
It may be mentioned that the final NRC draft, which was released in 2018, excluded a total of 40,07,707 people.
