Addressing a joint press conference with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen in Dhaka on September 17th, 2019, the minister said, “The NRC in Assam is India’s internal matter.” However, the minister refrained from making any remark on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
Jaishankar, who was in a two-day visit, held wide-ranging talks with Momen on issues like the long-pending pact on the Teesta water
It may be mentioned that earlier this month, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah raised India’s concerns over the illegal immigration from Bangladesh to the Northeast before the Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at the 7th meeting of India-Bangladesh Home Minister Level Talks (HMLT) held in New Delhi.
On September 9th, 2019, while addressing the North East Democratic Alliance convention, Shah assured the Northeastern states that intruders will not be allowed to stay in the country.
The final NRC list was released on August 31st, 2019, after a six-year-long process. The process was started in 2013 after the Supreme Court promulgated an order. The final list included a total of 3,11,21,004 persons and excluded a total of 19,06,657 persons including those who did not submit claims.
