Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on December 3rd, 2019 slit his left palm in the Assam Legislative Assembly and wrote slogans to protest against the Assam government.
The Congress MLA used his blood to write slogans against the Assam government’s purported move to sell the Nagaon-Cachar paper mills.
Kurmi, who represents Mariani constituency in Assam’s Jorhat district, walked out of the Floor of the House, sat at the entrance and cut his palm with a blade.
He also wrote slogans protesting against the Assam government’s purported move to sell Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited ( Namrup Fertilizer Complex), Halmari Tea Estate in Dibrugarh and Ailabari tea estate in Karimganj.
This Congress MLA is often called ‘quirky’ for opting for weird ways to register his protest.
The first day of the winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly began on November 28th, 2019. The opposition parties Congress, All India United Democratic Front staged noisy protest over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and National Register of Citizens and walkout from the Assembly session.
On the first day of the session too, Kurmi staged a sit-in demonstration holding placards against the shutdown of two tea estates.
