    Noisy Scenes On First Day Of Assam Assembly Over Flood Issue

    Guwahati: The first day of the summer session of the Assam Assembly on July 26th, 2019 witnessed pandemonium with opposition parties staging noisy protest over the Assam deluge that rendered over lakhs homeless and claimed at least 75 lives.

    The opposition staged a stormy walkout of the Assam Legislative Assembly today after the Speaker refused to listen to the opposition as they wanted the issue of flood and erosion to be raised on ‘priority’ basis. The speaker of the Assembly Hitendra Nath Goswami suggested it may be raised after the question hour.

    The Congress MLAs including the Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia were seen staging a protest inside the Assembly holding placards. On the other hand Karimganj, North Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha staged a hunger strike demanding boost of power supply in the district.

    It may be mentioned that the six-day session will continue till August 1st, 2019 and is slated to hold discussions on a host of topics ranging from flood-mitigation plans, synergising Act East Policy to children, women’s security, development of Barak Valley to name a few.

    Meanwhile hundreds of people staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the Assembly pertaining to a series of the state government’s ‘unfulfilled demands’.

    ‘We want votership’, ‘No votership No rest’ rent the air as the protesters shouted slogans holding banners and placards at the last gate area on July 26th,2019. Their demand consisted of ‘Assam flood to be declared as a national issue’, ‘Central relief funds for the victims’, ‘solution to the drinking water problem in Guwahati city’, ‘job regularization of TET teachers’ and so on.
