After the amended Motor Vehicles Act came into effect in Assam, a video of alleged misuse of power by the city traffic police surfaced on social media triggering a debate on September 30th, 2019.
In the video, the traffic police personnel are seen forcefully dragging a man into a police vehicle for allegedly violating the traffic rules. After the video went viral, the citizens slammed the police for ‘harassing’ common man. In the video, the man is heard crying and pleading the traffic cops to let him go. The traffic personnel, on the other hand, are seen pushing, shoving him into the vehicle.
When contacted by Time8, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Guwahati, Prasanta Saikia clarified that the man violated the traffic signal at Bharalumukh and blocked the TR Phookan road which created chaos among the public during peak hour of the day today. “Thereafter, the traffic personnel, who were present in the spot, held him for violating the traffic laws and asked him to provide documents of the vehicle (pick-up van). But, he failed to provide any proper valid documents,” Saikia said.
“He (the driver) told police that the documents of his vehicle were seized in West Bengal. He was fined for violating traffic laws,” Saikia added.
The accused has been identified as Siddique Ali of Assam’s Dhubri district.
