The ban on mobile-internet services in Assam will continue till December 19th, 2019. The internet was banned keeping in view the law and order situation following the massive protest over the amended Citizenship Act.
However, the broadband internet services have been restored across the state on December 17th, 2019.
After hearing four petitions filed against the ban on internet services in the state, the Gauhati High Court on December 17th, 2019 directed the Assam government to lift the restriction in a phased manner.
A division bench comprising of Chief Justice Ajay Lamba and Justice Achintya Malla Bujar Barua passed the order directing the government to consider the restoration of the internet services. The PILs were filed by journalist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, advocate Bonoshri Gogoi and others.
The cab drivers union took out a protest rally in the city against the internet ban. The union leaders demanded immediate restoration of mobile internet by saying that they were adversely affected by the ban.
The internet services were suspended from 7 pm on December 11th, 2019 following the massive protests after the Citizenship Bill was cleared by the Rajya Sabha. The protest led to violence in some parts of the city along with the rest part of the state resulting in loss of public property and human lives.
