Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha Demands Discussion On Clause 6 Report In Assam Assembly

The High-Level Committee for Implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord submitted the report before the Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal and his cabinet on February 25

Congress MLA from Karimganj North, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on February 26th, 2020, demanded a detailed discussion on the report on Clause 6 of the historic Assam Accord submitted by the panel in the Legislative Assembly.

Addressing a press conference here in Guwahati, Purkayastha said, “The report should be sent to the Centre after a detailed discussion on the report of the panel in the Assembly.”

He further said that he would request the speaker of the state Legislative Assembly to hold discussion in the matter.

The High-Level Committee for Implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord submitted the report before the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his cabinet on February 25th, 2020. However, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) skipped the submission of the report saying that the Centre should directly receive the report.

The Central government had constituted the committee in July 2019 to prepare the report on the implementation of the Clause 6 of the accord. The panel was given a period of six months to prepare the report and subsequently extended one month.

The Assam Accord was in 1985 between the Central Government, state government and the leaders of the Assam movement.

Clause 6 of the accord envisages constitutional, legislative and administrative measures to protect and preserve the cultural, social, linguistic identity of the Assamese people.
