GMCH To Be Converted Into Coronavirus Hospital In Next 48 Hours: Himanta

Only gynaecology, cancer department and the emergency ward will continue in the GMCH: Himanta Biswa Sarma said

In a big move to fight against the spread of the COVID-19, Assam Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 27th, 2020, announced that the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital will be converted into coronavirus treatment hospital in next 48 hours.

The minister said that only gynaecology, cancer department and the emergency ward will continue in the hospital.

Informing that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked with 34 private hospitals, the Minister said that the GMCH will be gradually shut down for general patients in the next 48 hours.

“The private hospitals and the nursing homes agreed to take the entire load of GMCH. From tomorrow onwards, the patients will be redirected to the private nursing home. It is not necessary to come to GMCH. They can directly go to private nursing homes,” he added.

He also announced that the government will do the same arrangement in the Assam Medical College and the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Stating that Assam has not registered any case, Sarma said, “A total of 308 blood samples have been collected in the state so far. Of them, 277 have been tested and found negative.”
