    COVID-19: Nizamuddin Emerges As New Hotspot, Death Toll Rises To 45 In India

    Global death toll has reached 42,158 while over 8 lakh are infected across over 170 countries

    The Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi’s Nizamuddin has become the latest challenge in India’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic after scores of people across states were found to have caught coronavirus after attending the event.

    The event defied lockdown orders in Delhi as over 3400 people gathered in the Nizamuddin Markaz building ignoring social distancing norms. States such as Assam, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh have identified hundreds who attended the event and have now been quarantined.

    Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on March 31st, 2020, said 1,548 people have been evacuated from Nizamuddin Markaz (centre) hereof which, 441 were hospitalised after they showed coronavirus symptoms. In a digital press conference, the chief minister said 1,107 people, who attended the religious congregation in Nizamuddin West, have been quarantined.

    As many as 216 people from Assam and seven from Meghalaya also attended the congregation held at Nizamuddin.

    Meanwhile, the coronavirus death toll in India rose to 45 and the number of confirmed cases climbed to 1397. On the other hand, the global death toll has reached 42,158 while over 8 lakh are infected across over 170 countries.

    Assam registered its first positive case on March 31st, 2020. A 52-year-old man from Karimganj district has been tested positive and is under treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
