    Assam Registers First COVID-19 Case, Third In Northeast

    Assam registered its first positive case for coronavirus (COVID-19 on March 31st, 2020 and third in Northeast India.

    A 52-year-old person has been found positive for coronavirus and is undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed.

    The minister, while saying that the health condition of the patient is stable, said, “We are doing all the needful follow up on his travel history.”

    The man hails from Badarpur in Assam’s Karimganj district. As per information, he has a travel history to Delhi. He had reportedly returned from Delhi on March 6th, 2020 and travelled from Guwahati’s Hatigaon to Silchar on March 16th, 2020.

    The patient had also reportedly attended the Nizamuddin Markaz congregation which has emerged as COVID-19 hotspot where around 200 people showed symptoms of novel coronavirus after taking part in a religious gathering a few days ago.

    Sarma further told reporters that the family members have already been sent to isolation. He once again appealed the people of the state to stay indoors to prevent the spread of the lethal coronavirus.

    Earlier, a 23-year-old girl from Imphal (west) was identified as the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in Manipur. With a travel history to UK, the person is being treated at JNIMS.

    Later, Mizoram also reported a positive coronavirus case as a 50-year-old man with recent travel history to Holland was tested positive. This is the second case in Northeast India.

    The sample was tested at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH). The patient, who hails from Aizawl, is under treatment at the Zoram Medical College in Mizoram.

    Assam government has converted Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, Assam Medical College and Hospital and the SMCH into COVID-19 hospital. Moreover, the government has prepared the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital and Sonapur Civil Hospital for treatment of coronavirus patients. The government has also set up a 700-bedded makeshift quarantine centre at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.
