    Section 144 Clamped In Cachar After Speeding Truck Kills 2 Women

    Local people set the truck ablaze and pelted stones at the security forces

    To maintain peace and tranquillity, Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in Cachar in view of a road accident which took place in Meherpur area on October 30th, 2019.

    Two women – Sonali Das and Pompa Das – were killed and several others were injured when a speeding truck ran over people participating in a Kali puja procession at Birbal Bazar on the night of October 30th, 2019.

    Local people managed to stop the truck and set it ablaze. They also set fire to a police motorbike and pelted stones at the security forces who reached the spot to control the situation. However, the driver and handyman managed to flee from the spot.

    The protesting local residents demanded compensation for the family of the deceased persons. Security has been beefed up in the area. There were also reports of a group of youth vandalising private vehicles, business establishments on October 31st, 2019. Police arrested two men in relation to the vandalism incident.

    As per the order, movement of five or more persons in a group in any public place, road within Cachar district has been restricted.
