Guwahati Zoo To Celebrate Plastic- Free Birthday Of Baby Hoolock Gibbon

This is the first time in the Assam State Zoo's history that a hoolock gibbon was bred in captivity

The Assam State Zoo Cum Botanical Garden is planning to celebrate a plastic-free birthday of around two-month-old hoolock gibbon. The baby is the first successful breeding of hollock gibbon in captivity in Assam.

Considered to be one of the most endangered primate species in the world, the hoolock gibbon was born at the zoo on August 2nd, 2019. Assam Forest Minister tweeted the news on September 21st, 2019. The zoo authorities are now planning to celebrate its birthday on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, i.e. October 2nd, 2019.

“As the birthday celebration will coincide with Gandhi Jayanti, we are planning to make it plastic-free. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also start a new movement against single-use plastic from October 2nd, 2019,” said Aparajita Borborah, Public Relations Officer of the zoo, while speaking to Time8.

The hoolock gibbons are three primate species of genus hoolock in the gibbon family, Hylobatidae, native to Northeast India, Eastern Bangladesh and Southwest China. Hoolocks are the second-largest of the gibbons, after the Siamang.

“It (the birth) is a matter of pride for all of us. We have been able to conduct a successful breeding of the rare species in the state zoo. During the birthday celebration, we are planning to invite school kids, distribute sweets and snacks. We are also thinking of inviting a resource person to speak on captive breeding,” Borborah added.
