    Guwahati Police Ask Facebook To Remove ‘Assamese Online’ Page, Case Lodged

    Guwahati Police has written to the authorities of the social networking service company, Facebook to take down a page identified as ‘Assamese Online’. A case also has been lodged against the page.

    Addressing a press meet in Guwahati on November 14th, 2019, Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said, “It’s a public page (Assamese Online). We have taken the posts into account. Our Crime Branch has written to Facebook to take down the page and inform us about the persons operating the page. We are in constant touch with the Nodal Officer of Facebook India.”

    The DP of the page is that of late eminent litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami. Kumar said that a series of posts were shared on the ‘Assamese Online’ page which might spoil the peace and communal harmony in the society.

    He added, “We came across a total of 15 pages where controversial and inflammatory posts were shared. These pages might breach the peace, law and order in the city. We have counselled a number of admins of such pages. Till now, a number of such controversial pages have also been deleted. Our Cyber department is investigating against fake pages.”
