An adult male leopard was killed in a road accident in the wee hours of August 23rd, 2019 after being run over by an unidentified vehicle on KB Road connecting Jorhat and Golaghat districts of Assam.
The leopard may have been hit by the speeding vehicle while it tried to cross the road. Few passers-by who sighted the animal lying dead in the Dholajan area of KB Road informed the forest department.
Meanwhile, a team of forest officials has taken the carcass of the leopard into their possession as the crowd assembled to catch a glimpse of the big cat.
It may be mentioned, the State Forest department rescued a leopard in Dibrugarh on August 22nd, 2019, after it strayed into Panchali area of the city. The leopard attacked a resident during the rescue operation but he is safe now. After several hours, the forest officials finally succeed in tranquillizing the leopard.
Deforestation, flood, and scarcity of food are forcing the animals to come out of their natural habitat to seek shelter in the human habitations. This trespassing is resulting in an alarming rise in the unexpected encounters between wild animals and human beings.
In July this year, a photograph of a tigress found resting on a bed at a shack on the fringes of the flooded Kaziranga National Park took the internet by storm. After a day-long effort, the tigress was tranquilized and released into the wild.
