A total of 14 candidates have filed nomination for the upcoming elections for various posts of Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS). Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia including six others has filed nomination for the president post of the Sabha.
Along with Saikia, noted author Pakhila Kalita, eminent litterateur Joyasree Goswami Mahanta, Padma Shri Suryakanta Hazarika, Karabi Deka Hazarika, Prahlad Chandra Tasa and Basanta Kumar Goswami also filed nominations for the post.
Apart from being the winner of several literary awards including the Sahitya Akademi award, Saikia is a Fulbright scholar in community leadership from the University of Pennsylvania and the recipient of a doctorate in crime and development from Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. Mahanta was awarded India’s fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri in 2018.
The Government of India awarded Tasa the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to literature and education. Goswami is a linguist and former general secretary of the Sabha while Hazarika was elected as the advisor and coordinator to the Assamese language Advisory Board of Sahitya Akademi in 2003.
On the other hand, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma‘s mother and noted author Mrinalini Devi, noted writers Podumi Gogoi, Basanta Kumar Sarma and Ratimohan Nath has filed nomination for the post of vice-president.
A total of three nominations were filed for the post of General Secretary. Jadab Chandra Sarma, Harendra Kalita and Debojit Bora have filed nomination for the post.
The voting process and dispatching of ballot papers will start on November 1st, 2019 at district and branch levels of Sabha. The process will continue till December 10th, 2019. The members of the literary body, district and zonal branches, will be able to cast their votes via postal ballot.
The vote counting will take place on December 15th, 2019 in Guwahati.
