Bring 1kg Plastic, Take Free Saplings: Bongaigaon DC

The Robinhood Army, a volunteer organization for spreading cleanliness awareness is the key partner of the event

In a bid to free Bongaigaon town from single-use plastics, the Bongaigaon District Administration has come up with the ‘Plants for Plastic’ campaign. The campaign aims to encourage people to collect and remove plastic from their houses, commercial establishments and educational institutions. The decision has come following the clarion call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to curb plastic pollution in the country.

“We are urging people to bring plastics and deposit in the Municipality office. For every kilogram of plastic deposited, the citizens will be given a sapling along with a cloth bag in return. If one does not have enough space at their home for plantation, a community plantation drive will be conducted by the District Administration,” said Adil Khan, Deputy Commissioner, Bongaigaon.

Khan further informed that the event will be held at Gandhi Maidan, Bongaigaon at 9:30 am on October 1st, 2019. It is a part of a series of awareness campaigns on solid and plastic waste management.

“In line with Swachhata hi Seva campaign, this event aims at minimizing the usage of plastic bags throughout the district. The citizens of the district are requested to bring plastic bags and other plastics from their homes or business establishments and deposit them in the event,” he added.

On the day of the exchange programme, a rally with placards displaying the legal provisions of Plastic Waste Management Rules will also be taken out in the Bongaigaon Town. The Robinhood Army, a volunteer organization for spreading cleanliness awareness is the key partner of the event.

The Deputy Commissioner of Bongaigaon who conceptualized this unique idea for the clean and pollution-free society said that this special initiative will be taken to encourage the citizens to move towards the goal of ‘clean and green Bongaigaon’ by discarding the banned polythene and other harmful plastics.

In addition to this event, the Bongaigaon District Administration in coordination with Bongaigaon Municipal Board, Public Health Engineering department and Gram Panchayats is also organizing other events such as Cyclothon, Plogging and Padyatra at village and block level awareness campaigns for making the district free from single-use plastics.
