Congress legislator from Karimganj North, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on September 6th, 2019 held the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responsible for the death of Sabitri Roy in Hailakandi. Roy had allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on September 4th, 2019, over the exclusion of her name from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list.
Citing the example of ‘declared foreigner’ Bulu Sabdakar’s death in 2016 in Hailakandi, Purkayastha said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that his government would look into such incidents more deeply. But, we have not seen any initiative in the matter till date.”
It may be mentioned that in 2007, the Foreigner Tribunal bench at Karimiganj declared Sabdakar a foreigner. In 2010, he was apprehended by Asam Police and sent to the Silchar detention camp. Later, on March 17th, 2016, he died at the age of 75 at Silchar Medical College and Hospital due to tuberculosis and related diseases.
Slamming the state coordinator for NRC, Assam, Prateek Hajela, the MLA said, “Many bonafide Indian citizens have been excluded from the final list despite providing sufficient linkage documents.” He further said that the people have suffered due to the fault in the state machinery.
The Assam government on August 31st, 2019 published the final list of the NRC. A total of 3.11 crore people made it to the final list leaving out 19,06,657 persons including those who did not submit claims.
