    Ace Boxer Mary Kom Becomes First Woman Athlete To Be Recommended For Padma Vibhushan

    Mary Kom was honoured with Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards in 2013 and 2006

    Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom‘s name has been recommended for the prestigious Padma Vibhushan Award, the country’s second-highest civilian award. Kom also becomes the first woman athlete to be recommended by the Sports Ministry for Padma Vibhushan.

    As per media reports, the Sports Ministry has sent its first-ever all-women list of recommendations for this year’s Padma Awards. Once approved by Union Sports Kiren Rijiju, the names will be sent to the Padma Awards Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

    The 36-year-old sports star who is also a Rajya Sabha MP was on August 28th, 2019 honoured with Asia’s Best Female Athlete award in Malaysia. Hailing from a small hamlet in Kangathei village in Churachandpur district of rural Manipur, Kom had recently clinched gold in the 51 kg category event of the 23rd President’s Cup in Indonesia. She is called as ‘Magificient Mary’ by sports lovers and fans.

    Kom will represent India in the upcoming women’s world boxing championships which are scheduled to be held from October 3rd to October 13th, 2019 in Russia. Kom was honoured with Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards in 2013 and 2006 respectively. She was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2003.

    On the other hand, ace shuttler PV Sindhu has been recommended for the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian award. The names of wrestler Vinesh Phogat, former shooter Suma Shirur, table tennis star Manika Batra, hockey captain Rani Rampal, cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur (T20Is) and mountaineer twin sisters, Tashi and Nungshi Malik have been sent for Padma Shri awards.
