Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has dared the Modi-led central government to scrap Article 371 of the Constitution, which grants special status to most of the Northeastern states, as it did in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) by withdrawing Article 370.
Hitting out the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)during an event in Mumbai on September 14th, 2019, Pawar asked the Modi’s government to lift Article 371 from the Northeast and allow people to buy land here like it did in J&K.
The NCP chief said that his party will support the BJP if the central government abrogates Article 371 from the Northeaster states. Pawar alleged that the ruling government is trying to create terror among minorities.
It may be mentioned that Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Guwahati on September 8th, 2019, emphasised that the Centre will not abrogate Article 371 in the Northeastern states. “There is a vast difference between Article 30 and Article 371. The special status aims to preserve the culture. The Centre will not touch Article 371,” Shah said.
