As India is observing National Sports Day across the country to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on August 29th, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nation-wide “Fit India Movement”, at the Indira Gandhi Sports Stadium in New Delhi on the occassion.
The grand event was attended by Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, host of other dignitaries, National Sports Awards 2019 winners and so on.
Every year the President of India honours eminent sports personalities from the country by conferring them with honorary awards for their outstanding performances in their respective fields which includes—Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, Dronacharya Awards and Dhyan Chand Awards.
Amid the picturesque nature’s bounty Northeast(NE) India, the region is also home to some outstanding sports personalities making a mark in the global arena and bringing laurels to the country. The six-time world champion from Manipur, Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte in short Mary Kom has come a long way. The 36-year-old sports star who is also a Rajya Sabha MP was on August 28th, 2019 honoured with Asia’s Best Female Athlete award in Malaysia. Coming from a small hamlet in Kangathei village in Churachandpur district of rural Manipur, the fierce boxer is now a global name. She had recently clinched gold in the 51 kg category event of the 23rd President’s Cup in Indonesia. While the social media is abuzz with messages of National Sports Day, the netizens did not forget to make a special mention of their ‘Magnificient Mary’ for her significant contributions in the field of sports.
She is unstoppable and fierce and apparently became a household name after she went on to create history in the field of athletics by winning 5 back-to-back gold medals at an international platform. She added another feather to her hat after she bagged the sixth gold to her list of international accolades, at the Athleticky Mitink Reiter event in the Czech Republic in the 300-metre category. On September 25th, 2018 the ace spinster was conferred with Arjuna Award . She was appointed India’s first-ever youth ambassador of UNICEF-India last year. The Assam government also appointed her as the state brand ambassador for sports.
This artistic gymnast from Tripura represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She first gained attention after she became the first Indian female gymnast to win a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Karmakar represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics. Dipa was honoured with the coveted Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in the year 2016. She also received Padma Shri in 2017.
Four-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa became India’s first gold medallist at the President’s Cup boxing tournament. The Guwahati boy participated in the 2012 London Olympics and was the youngest Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics. He is the third Indian to clinch Gold at the Asian Games. He was awarded with ₹400,000 by the Indian Olympic Association for his silver medal at the Youth Olympics. The Sikkim government also awarded him with Rs 500,000 cash.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, an Indian weightlifter from Manipur, has won multiple medals and World Championships at different platforms. She was awarded the Padma Shri for her contributions to the field of sports. She was conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards by the Government of India in 2018. Chanu had won the silver medal in the women’s 48 kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow. Her biggest achievement came in 2017 when she won the gold medal at World Weightlifting Championships held in Anaheim, United States. She received India’s highest civilian sports honour Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna for 2018. In 2018, Chanu was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
