After Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bhopal MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, another MLA of the party in Assam has described Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse as a patriot.
BJP MLA from Assam’s Hojai, Shiladitya Dev defended Pragya and called Godse a “real patriot”, as reported by Aaj Tak. “I salute Pragya Thakur because she has spoken the truth. There are very few people in India who can speak the truth,” Dev was quoted in the report.
Her statement in the Lok Sabha has stirred a political storm across the country. Amidst the uproar over her statements on Godse, the BJP has barred her from attending its parliamentary party meeting during the ongoing Parliament session and also removed her from a consultative committee on defence.
However, the BJP lawmaker defended her statement and issued a clarification alleging that she was a victim of concerted propaganda against her.
Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee has lodged a police complaint against Thakur for her comment in which she purportedly referred to Godse as “deshbhakt”.
This is not the first time that either Thakur or Dev has courted controversy because of their comments. During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Thakur had described Godse as a patriot, triggering a huge political storm across the nation.
Statements of Dev on various issues related to the National Register of Citizens, Foreigners’ Tribunal and Citizenship Amendment Bill also created massive uproar in the state this year.
