Naga Peace Talks Should Not Compromise Territorial Integrity Of Manipur: Student Groups

Manipur has never been a part of Nagaland or other adjacent states: NMBSU, BMGP

While the Centre is looking for ways to wrap up the decades-old Naga Peace Talks, Manipuri student groups have expressed their apprehensions in regard to the negotiations demanding that the territorial integrity of Manipur should not be affected.

The Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Students Union(NMBSU) and Bishnupriya Manipuri Ganadsangram Parishad(BMGP) on November 14th, 2019 submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through Cachar Deputy Commissioner demanding ‘not to include any part of Manipur state in the boundary of proposed Nagalim through peace talks’.

The student bodies in the memorandum mentioned that ‘Manipur has never been a part of Nagaland or other adjacent state’ and that ‘inclusion of any part of Manipur for creation of proposed Nagalim is quite an injustice to the Manipuri(both Bishnupriya & Meithei) belonging to the state or other parts of the country’.

It may be mentioned that the Naga peace talks are going on with the Centre where the later has finally decided to accept the demands of the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, NSCN-IM but with certain conditions. However, there has been no official announcement on the end or final settlement in this regard.

The NSCN-IM has been demanding a greater Nagalim and a separate flag which consists of the Naga-inhabited areas of the neighboring states of Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh.

The Centre had earlier set October 31st, 2019 deadline for the signing of the peace agreement but there has been no official announcement on the end or final settlement on this regard.
