Myanmar Trained ULFA-I Woman Cadre Surrenders In Sivasagar

The woman cadre of the militant outfit decided to join the mainstream for the upbringing of her 4-year-old daughter

A hardcore female cadre of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam, Independent(ULFA-I) led by its fugitive leader Paresh Baruah surrendered in front of the Sivasagar police on September 21st, 2019.

The cadre identified as Majoni Das had joined the militant outfit in 2013 and was looking after their organizations publicity wing.

She was the wife of ‘sergeant’ Rupantar Asom. He is reported to have died at the Myanmar camp a few days ago.

After the death of her husband, the ULFA-I cadre decided to return to their family in Kathpar and join the mainstream for the upbringing of her 4-year-old daughter.

According to reports, Das was earlier working as a woman activist, teacher, writer from Sivasagar district. She was an active member of the women movement Nari Adhikar Suraksha Samiti (NASS). Later due to financial difficulties she had joined the Purva Bharati Educational Trust, Jorhat. However, she was reported missing since 2013 and accordingly a case was registered with the local police. Later the family of Majoni was informed that she had joined the underground outfit.

It may be mentioned that the militant outfit operating in Assam seeks to establish an independent state of Assam with armed struggle in the Assam conflict. Citing it as a terrorist organisation, the Indian government had banned the organization after it had started its operations in 1990.
