Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met on January 11th, 2020 at Raj Bhawan, amidst ongoing protests across the city against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The politically significant meeting comes at a time when Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is vehemently opposing the CAA, and the BJP pressing for its implementation.
Modi will be in Kolkata on January 11th-12th, 2020. He is scheduled to attend the function marking the 150th anniversary of Kolkata Port Trust on January 12th, 2020 and other programmes.
The PM will also inaugurate a light and sound show at Rabindra Setu, popularly known as Howrah Bridge.
Speaking to reporters, Banerjee said she asked Modi to rethink over CAA and pan-India implementation of National Register of Citizens. She termed her meeting with Modi as “courtesy visit”.
