Modi Is A Liar: Assam Congress On PM’s ‘No Detention Centre’ Claim

The objective of the NPR is to create a comprehensive identity database of every "usual resident" of the country

Soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at an election rally in Delhi that “there are no detention centres in India”, the Assam Congress accused him of lying.

Addressing media persons in Guwahati on December 24th, 2019, Assam Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia said, “He (Modi) is lying that there is no detention camp in the country. As per the order of the Central government in 1998, detention camps were set up in Assam.”

He added, “The construction of an exclusive detention camp is underway in Goalpara’s Matia. The money for its construction has been released by the Centre.”

After Modi blamed Congress for spreading rumours about detention camps, the party attacked him by saying that it would take “simple a simple Internet search” to expose his claim.

“Does PM Modi believe Indians can’t do a simple Google search to fact-check his lies? The detention centres are extremely real and will continue to grow as long as this government is in power,” the opposition party posted through its Twitter handle.

However, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on December 24th, 2019 said the detention centre in Assam is the fallout of an order of the Gauhati High Court. He said that the Centre has never asked the State government to build a detention camp.

Saikia also alleged that BJP-led central government will create chaos and confusion by updating the National Population Register (NPR).

“The BJP government is trying to create unrest by using NPR. The government is trying to nullify the Assam Accord by creating NPF. The government is working as per its whims,” he said.

The Union Cabinet is expected to discuss and approve the proposal to update the NPR on December 24th, 2019. The objective of the NPR is to create a comprehensive identity database of every “usual resident” of the country and will have a demographic as well as biometric details.
