Union Home Minister Amit Shah on August 6th, 2019, assured the states designated special powers under Article 371 of the Indian Constitution that the Modi government had no intention to remove the provision.
“I would like to assure the northeastern states that the Narendra Modi government has no intention to remove Article 371,” Shah said in the Lok Sabha during the debate on Article 370. His statement came in reaction to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s argument in the House on the matter.
It may be mentioned that most of the Northeastern states have been accorded special provisions under Article 371. Special status aims to preserve their tribal culture.
